49ers’ Jim Tomsula says team is ‘evaluating everyone’, including Colin Kaepernick
On Sunday, for the fifth time in eight games this season, 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick didn’t throw a touchdown pass, and for the sixth time in eight games this season, San Francisco lost, this time against NFC West rival St. Louis.
Kaepernick completed less than half of his pass attempts on Sunday, and completely missed seeing a wide-open Torrey Smith in the first quarter when Smith was left uncovered by the Rams on a second-down play when the 49ers were pushed back near the goal line.
Just three years after leading the 49ers to the Super Bowl, some fans and media are wondering if it is time for San Francisco to bench Kaepernick, who has seemingly taken a step back when as a fifth-year player he should be taking steps forward.
On Monday, when head coach Jim Tomsula met with reporters, he was asked again about Kaepernick’s status as the team’s starter, and he didn’t back the QB as he has done previously.
“Colin didn’t play good enough, neither did the team,” Tomsula said. “The San Francisco 49ers didn’t play good enough.”
That’s a far cry from 11 days ago, when after the Niners’ loss to Seattle, Tomsula said, “Colin is our quarterback. There are no controversies.”
Though Kaepernick has six touchdowns and five interceptions on the season, he has not committed a turnover in almost a month.
The 49ers host Atlanta on Sunday. Blaine Gabbert is the team’s No. 2 quarterback.
