NHL Three Stars: Oilers come back vs. Habs; Hutchinson, Zatkoff shine
No. 1 Star: Leon Draisaitl, Edmonton Oilers
Draisaitl’s second goal of the night with 1:02 left in the third period broke a 3-3 tie and completed a four-goal Oilers comeback during a 4-3 win over the Montreal Canadiens. Connor McDavid, now with 12 points on the season, recorded two third period assists.
No. 2 Star: Michael Hutchinson, Winnipeg Jets
Hutchinson improved to 4-0-0 with a 45-save night as the Jets downed the Chicago Blackhawks 3-1. Blake Wheeler, Andrew Ladd and Mark Scheifele scored the goals and Bryan Little set up two for the Jets.
No. 3 Star: Jeff Zatkoff, Pittsburgh Penguins
The Penguins backup netminder made his first start of the season and made 50 saves as Pittsburgh edged the Buffalo Sabres 4-3 in Dan Bylsma’s return. Patric Hornqvist, Ben Lovejoy and Evgeni Malkin each recorded a goal and added an assist. Sidney Crosby chipped in with two helpers of his own as the Penguins won for the sixth time in seven games.
Honorable Mention: Pascal Dupuis scored his first goal for the Penguins since Nov. 14, 2014 … Chris Terry tied the game late in the third period and Ron Hainsey put home the overtime winner as the Carolina Hurricanes beat the New York Islanders 3-2:
Alex Tanguay and Nathan MacKinnon provided the goals while Semyon Varlamov made 34 saves as the Colorado Avalanche topped the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 to snap a four-game losing streak … Pretty, pretty good save here by Ben Bishop:
P.K. Subban submitted this candidate for save of the year in the loss to Edmonton … Colton Parayko continued his great rookie season with his fourth goal as the St. Louis Blues beat the Anaheim Ducks 2-1. Parayko broke the 1-1 deadlock midway through the third period with a fortunate bank shot at poor Frederik Andersen’s expense:
Vladimir Tarasenko opened the scoring off of this totally unfair 2-on-0:
According to the NHL, Parayko is the first rookie to record 10 shots in a game since Alex Ovechkin in 2006 … Patrick Sharp had a pair of goals, including the tying tally late in the third period to force overtime. In the extra period, Jamie Benn was the hero, notching his seventh point in three games with this snipe helping the Dallas Stars get by the Vancouver Canucks 4-3:
Travis Zajac scored two power play goals as the New Jersey Devils upended the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1. Kyle Palmieri added a goal and two assists as New Jersey won their fourth straight away from Prudential Center.
Did You Know? “Colorado coach Patrick Roy is 1-1-1 in road games at Tampa Bay. He never won a road game as a goalie against the Lightning during his Hall of Fame playing career, going 0-7-1.” (AP)
Dishonorable Mention: Anaheim is now 1-7-2 on the season and have lost all five games on their current road trip … Chicago’s four-game win streak came to an end … This fan needs to sit in the box and feel shame.
