Sammy Watkins answers critics about injuries: ‘You’ll forever be losers’
Apparently Buffalo Bills wide receiver Sammy Watkins has been receiving some negative feedback from “fans” on his social media channels with regard to the ankle injury that kept him from Sunday’s loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, which was (shameless plug alert) broadcast for the world right here on Yahoo.
So, Watkins fired back in a since deleted Instagram comment that lives on because there’s an interweb.
Here’s that response, as best as one can tell, once we’ve run it through spellcheck a few hundred times:
“To all the people who have a problem with me being injured: You guys go out there and play this sport. It’s a 100 percent injury rate. I’m not the first or last person who’s going to be injured. The difference between me and you guys is you’re mad and I’m not. Get a life and go to work. Stop worrying about my job, because I’m good on this end and you’ll forever be losers. Most of you just wish to be in this position, so continue working your little jobs for the rest of your lives. Since everyone wants a response here, you got one. Have a blessed day.”
Well, you certainly have to love the “Have a blessed day” there at the end.
While Watkins’ frustration is certainly understandable, considering he’s missed three of his team’s seven games due to calf and ankle injuries through no fault of his own this season, it’s never advisable from a public relations standpoint for a guy who’s making millions to tell folks to “continue working your little jobs for the rest of your lives,” regardless of how misplaced and horrible his detractors may have been.
Watkins must’ve sensed this, since he deleted the comment and clarified his stance on Twitter: Fans aren’t the ones “working little jobs”; people who have a problem with athletes being injured are.
Watkins made headlines a couple weeks ago, when he said his lack of targets was “making me look bad,” and I, for one, would like to see him back on the field and targeted plenty after their bye, since his absence has hurt my fantasy team, too. But that doesn’t give me the right to call Watkins out for suffering an injury — on a heck of a touchdown catch, no less. Now excuse me while I get back to my little job.
