Are Jerry Seinfeld’s Mets-themed sneakers a good luck charm?
When a baseball team emerges from the rubble created by years of losing and rebuilding, we must search for reasons to explain the turnaround.
Of course, that almost always starts at the top or at least somewhere near the top. In the New York Mets case, for example, we must credit general manager Sandy Alderson for building a solid young core of pitchers, manager Terry Collins for helping see their talent through, and the players themselves for working hard and producing.

Sometimes that isn’t enough though. Sometimes we have to look deeper for reasons. because sometimes there’s something deeper in play. Again, we look to the Mets, because they not only emerged quicker than most anticipated, they’re also riding the unlikely yet historic power surge of Daniel Murphy.
It’s a little strange, but thanks to the folks at MLB.com’s Cut 4 we may have already identified the driving force here. It has to be Jerry Seinfeld’s Mets-themed shoes from Nike. No other explanation makes sense.
According to Cut 4, Seinfield acquired the shoes prior to the season, which means he acquired them prior to the Mets landing Yoenis Cespedes or any of their other monumental moments. They’ve been there — maybe not on his feet, but around — for the entire ride. They’ve become a staple in Jerry’s baseball viewing experience, and one of his friends even thinks they belong in Cooperstown.
If the Mets win the World Series, the shoes will have served their purpose and should be acknowledged for their power. Also, it would just be cool for Seinfeld’s shoes to be in the Hall of Fame. He’s obviously as big a Met fan as you’ll find, and that would be a fun item to have representing the team and his fandom. This absolutely needs to happen, win or lose.
In the meantime, we fully expect to see Jerry at Citi Field sporting those shoes. And we can’t help but root for them to make an on-field appearance, perhaps for a ceremonnial first pitch.
