Mets-Royals World Series: Preview
The Fall Classic is set. With the Kansas City Royals vanquishing the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALCS, we know know they’ll be facing the New York Mets in the World Series. It’ll be the first World Series ever between two expansion teams (the Mets were added in 1962; Royals in 1969).
No, the Mets and Royals haven’t ever met in the World Series. Here are their previous trips:
Mets: 1969 (win), 1973, 1986 (win), 2000
Royals: 1980, 1985 (win), 2014
We’ll soon be able to add 2015 to the list for each.
The Mets got here by winning the NL East with a 90-72 record, beating the 92-win Dodgers three games to two in the NLDS and the 97-win Cubs in a four-game sweep in the NLCS.
The Royals got here by running away with the AL Central — winning 95 games which was the third-best total in franchise history — taking out the 86-win Astros three games to two in the ALDS and the 93-win Blue Jays in six games in the ALCS.
We will get a nice old-school feeling of infamiliarity here, as the two clubs didn’t play each other during the regular season. They haven’t played since 2013, so there will be a good number of first-time batter vs. pitcher matchups, too.
