Best of Midnight Madness: Tom Izzo’s ‘Mission Izzpossible’ entrance
Midnight Madness produces some memorable moments each year, so The Dagger is chronicling the best ones from this October’s lineup. If you spot something we missed, let us know here or here.
The king of creative Midnight Madness entrances once again found another memorable way to open the Michigan State basketball season. Tom Izzo and his staff starred in Mission Izzpossible, which depicted the Michigan State coach rescuing the national championship trophy from thieves. Then Izzo arrived clad in a Tom Cruise-esque dark suit as the Mission Impossible theme played in the background. “We’ve gone to seven Final Fours in the last 17 years, which is more than Duke, Kansas, Kentucky or anyone else,” Izzo told the crowd at the Breslin Center.” But the mission is we’ve got to win another national championship.” In past years, Izzo has pulled off all sorts of creative Midnight Madness entrances, from dressing as Iron Man, to driving a race car, to rappelling from the ceiling, to being shot out of a cannon. This year’s entrance won’t eclipse last year’s when Izzo dressed as a member of the band KISS, but it’s further proof the king of Midnight Madness isn’t abdicating his crown anytime soon.
