Seattle hire Scott Servais as manager, Tim Bogar as bench coach
The Seattle Mariners will hire former big league catcher Scott Servais, who has no managing experience, to replace Lloyd McClendon. The Los Angeles Times first reported the news and the club confirmed it Friday afternoon.
This is not the first time Seattle general manager Jerry Dipoto has hired Servais. The first hire he made four years ago when he was the Angels GM was adding Servais to his staff as assistant general manager responsible for scouting and player development. Servais has worked in that role for the Angels the past four years.
The Times also reported Tim Bogar will join Servais in Seattle as bench coach. Bogar served as interim manager in Texas in 2014 and was a special assistant to the GM with the Angels the past year.

While he has no experience as a manager, he did play the game at the big league level for 11 seasons with four different teams from 1991 to 2001. He also interviewed for the San Diego manager position in the past month.

Prior to his time with the Angels, Servais spent six seasons with the Texas Rangers as director of player development and overseeing the organization’s farm system. He also worked as a catching instructor for the Chicago Cubs and as a scout for the Colorado Rockies.

Servais, 48, will be Seattle’s seventh fulltime manager since the team’s last playoff appearance in 2001. He inherits a team with a solid young nucleus. The Mariners were thought by some to be a contender for the American League pennant at the beginning of the season, but they fell well short of the playoffs at 76-86
