Kenseth: Logano ‘too good’ to not have crashed him intentionally
Joey Logano contended that his contact with Matt Kenseth near the end of Sunday’s race at Kansas was not an intentional spin.
Kenseth doesn’t believe it.
“Yeah, some day he might mature a little bit, but, first of all, he should have stopped running his mouth, ‘A,’ and number two, he’s lying when he said he didn’t do it on purpose because he lifted your tires off the ground offset to the left and he’s too good a race car driver to do that by accident,” Kenseth said Friday at Talladega.
Logano and Kenseth were racing for the lead with five laps to go when Logano got a huge run off turn four on Kenseth. Kenseth, who had blocked Logano previously in the run, blocked him again and Logano’s car hit the frontstretch wall entering turn one. Logano dove a little lower than Kenseth into turn one and his right front fender made contact with the left rear of Kenseth’s car, spinning the No. 20.
This was Logano’s response when he was asked Sunday if he had intentionally spun Kenseth.
“No, no, I think we both went for the same piece of real estate,” Logano said. “We both went into that corner hard. I wanted to get position and get to the inside of him, and then he went for the same piece of real estate, as well.
“I wanted that second lane to be able to stay on the inside of him. You know, I’m thinking he may get trapped up behind one of those lap cars in front of him because they were running the top before, and they all hopped to the bottom, but you don’t know that until you’re in the corner, right?”
Kenseth can be a very sarcastic and someone who proclaims to know very little at times when asked questions about certain things. So part of us wonders just how much Kenseth is speaking out of frustration. If he was an outsider to the conflict and was being asked to comment on the replay, would he make the same comments? We’re not sure.
And we understand the frustration. Kenseth lost his best shot to move on in the Chase with the spin. He needed to win and he ended up finishing 14th. He now has to win at Talladega to move on in the Chase. Given his recent history at Talladega, it’s certanly possible. But it sure isn’t probable.
