Best of Midnight Madness: Two crazy dunks from Derrick Jones
Midnight Madness produces some memorable moments each year, so The Dagger is chronicling the best ones from this October’s lineup. If you spot something we missed, let us know here or here.
The sprained ankle that had kept Derrick Jones from practicing until Wednesday apparently is no longer an issue. The UNLV freshman put on a show worthy of his reputation as one of the nation’s premier dunkers on Thursday night after persuading doctors to allow him to participate in the Rebels’ Midnight Madness dunk contest. In his first attempt, the Jones lined up three teammates in the paint including 7-foot Stephen Zimmerman and 6-foot-9 Ben Carter. Then the 6-foot-7 Jones cleared all three and threw down a smooth one-handed slam, albeit with Zimmerman ducking his head a bit. Jones’ winning dunk may have been more impressive than that one because it didn’t seem physically possible. He took a pass from Zimmerman off the side of the backboard and went through the legs before finishing with a resounding one-handed flush. Of course, this sort of thing is nothing new for Jones. His high school highlight film has more than 400,000 clicks on YouTube, and features a half dozen jaw-dropping dunks.
