Catcher David Ross loses track of count, brings levity to Cubs’ misery
It doesn’t matter if we’re talking about a regular-season game or a miserable do-or-die Game 4 of the NLCS, the situation Chicago Cubs catcher David Ross found himself in Wednesday night was hilarious.

He caught strike two from pitcher Travis Wood, thinking it was the third strike and final out of the inning. So Ross bolted for the dugout. Mets pitcher Steven Matz, who was at the plate, turned around, all confused-like. Watch:
That was only the first act of this play, however. When Ross got to the dugout, he rolled the ball into the stands. A kind gesture, for sure. But then he realized his mistake and had to get the ball back from a fan. Oy!
Even Cubs manager Joe Maddon looked amused by this:
Nothing was going right for the Cubs. They were down 6-0 at the time, as the Mets tried to sweep them out of the playoffs. That’s not funny. But Ross’ moment was. If it’s the only time the Cubs got to laugh during Game 4, at least it was a good one.
