Point Spread: Rebels -5.5

The Aggies were on a winning streak right up until they came into contact with the Alabama Crimson Tide last week. The game saw them lose in a 41-23 outcome, although it could probably have been predicted to end in such a way prior to the match taking place. Although Texas A&M’s defensive line up has improved in general, they still have little effect against opponents’ rushing tactics. Quarterback, Kyle Allen also played a somewhat disappointing game, completing just 20 of his 40 attempted passes for 263 yards, as well as throwing three interceptions.
Facing off against the Ole Miss Rebels should provide Texas A&M with a simpler task, though. The Aggies’ weakness in defence should prove to be of little issue against the Rebels’ weak rushing game. However, Texas do hold a generally strong offensive line overall, so Allen and running back, Tra Carson should be able to place enough pressure on the Rebels to be in with a chance of winning. Carson has carried 108 for 476 yards this season so far, and has claimed four touchdowns in the process. Freshman wide receiver, Christian Kirk has grasped on to 39 passes for 609 yards and recorded four touchdowns of his own as well.
However, don’t push aside the Rebels just yet. They have also had a generally decent 2015 season so far. Their first two games saw them achieve points in the 70s, while just two weeks ago they slaughtered New Mexico State in a 52-3 victory. However, on both ends of that win were losses to Florida and Memphis, respectively. The latter saw their chances of making to the playoffs completely torn apart, as the Tigers ended the game with a 37-24 win. Ole Miss’ defence weren’t able to do anything about Memphis quarterback, Paxton Lynch, and the team’s running game was all over the place during the match.
The Rebels may currently be the favourites to win, but they’ll have to work hard to achieve it. The team’s running game is in total dire straits, so they’ll need to resort to strong passes and improve upon their defence. Speaking of which, there’s a 50/50 chance that defensive tackle, Robert Nkemdiche won’t play against the Aggies, which has the potential to leave Ole Miss with little direction. Nkemdiche suffered a concussion during the game against Memphis, so the Rebels need to gather themselves up and start working as a solid, cohesive unit.

Some handicappers make their selections based on record from common opponents and if you did that for this game you would be taking the Rebels based on how each team did against the Crimson Tide. That Alabama win wasn’t as impressive as it looks at first glance. Alabama out yarded Ole Miss 503 to 433 but finished the game -5 in turnovers. You have to give the defense some credit for getting the turnovers, but on the whole they do require some luck. Since that game they’ve suffered some depletion of the starters on the defense with two defensive lineman unlikely to play this week. The Aggies have one poor game this season and it did come against the Tide. They were turnover prone in that game with three interceptions run back for TDs. Kyle Allen has only 5 INTs on the season to go with 14 TD passes, so we expect him to rebound with a good outing this week. Texas A&M is a solid club with the ‘Bama loss their first on the season and we don’t believe it would be a surprise if they got the straight up win here.
