Jeremy Guthrie wore Nike Air Mags in celebration of ‘Back to the Future’ Day
While the hoverboard is the most talked about futuristic toy we saw in “Back to the Future II,” let’s not forget that Marty McFly showed us another technological advance that sneakerheads have gushed about for years: Nike’s self-lacing shoes.
Michael J. Fox Foundation. Kansas City Royals pitcher Jeremy Guthrie — a noted sneaker aficionado — got one of them.
They’re called Air Mags and Nike actually put out replica pairs in 2011. They weren’t self-lacing, but they looked the same. Only 1,500 pair were released and sold in auctions that benefit the[Related: The Cubs won the World Series today, according to ‘Back to the Future II’]
Fittingly, Guthrie wore them Wednesday as the world celebrated “Back to the Future Day” (aka the future day Marty and Doc Brown traveled to in the BTTF sequel) and as the Royals got ready for Game 5 of the ALCS.
You can bet not a single person in Toronto hit Guthrie with a “what are those?!?”
While the Chicago Cubs fight for their own bit of “Back to the Future” novelty, this was pure fun for Guthrie, who also tweeted: “Back To the Future I & II were/are my fav movies ever…I have looked forward to this day for years! We finally made it!”
On that note, “Back to the Future” fans, you’ll be happy to know that Nike has apparently mastered the technology that will create self-lacing Nike Air Mags. Nike sent the first functional pair to Michael J. Fox for “Back to the Future” Day and assured us the actual shoes are coming next year. Check it out.
You figure Jeremy Guthrie is gonna get him a pair.
