Good and bad news for two of Jaguars’ biggest offensive playmakers
T.J. Yeldon has had a fair adjustment to the NFL, but he’s also finding out that it’s hard to be an iron man at running back in the pros.
Yeldon, the Jaguars’ rookie second-round pick, missed last week’s game with a groin injury, and he might be iffy to return for this week’s game against the Buffalo Bills. Yeldon was not practicing Wednesday during the portion that was open to the media, according to Hays Carlyon of the Jacksonville Times-Union. That doesn’t necessarily mean Yeldon won’t play, but it’s not a positive either.
The good news from Carlyon is that receiver Allen Robinson was practicing. That’s a relief for the Jaguars. Robinson was part of an ugly collision with Houston safety Lonnie Ballentine that left Ballentine with a serious knee injury. Robinson obviously was a bit luckier. The fact that he’s already practicing on Wednesday instead of sitting out as a precaution is a great sign for the Jaguars. Robinson already has 488 yards and five touchdowns this season, as the second-year player is quickly becoming Jacksonville’s best offensive threat.
Yeldon has had moments too. His 3.6-yard average has to be excused a bit because the Jaguars have had offensive line issues and haven’t had a reliable run game in years. Yeldon had his first career 100-yard game in Week 4 and scored his first NFL touchdown on a catch in Week 5 before he suffered an injury. Groin injuries can be tricky for a running back so the Jaguars won’t rush their rookie second-round pick back to action. Toby Gerhart and Denard Robinson would be available if Yeldon can’t play.
The Jaguars are 1-5 and need contributions from all their top players to turn their season around. At least it looks like they’ll have Robinson back for Sunday.
