Part of I-15 in San Diego renamed for Padres Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn
A 4.5-mile stretch of Interstate 15 in San Diego’s North County was renamed Monday in honor of local legend Tony Gwynn.
The segment of the freeway between Scripps Poway Parkway and Camino Del Norte is now known as Tony Gwynn Memorial Freeway after the San Diego Padres Hall of Famer and local icon who went on to coach at his alma mater San Diego State following a 20-year career in the major leagues.

Gwynn died in June 2014 after fighting cancer of the salivary gland. He was 54.
Gwynn played his final game on Oct. 7, 2001, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2007. He finished his career with 3,141 hits and a lifetime .338 batting average. He is remembered as one of the best pure hitters in the history of the game. He played in two World Series in 1984 and 1998 but never won a championship.

Gwynn’s son, Tony Gwynn Jr.; Alicia Gwynn, the Hall of Famer’s wife; and Anisha Gwynn Jones, Gwynn’s daughter, attended a ceremony unveiling one of the signs that is being hung on that section of the freeway.
