Notre Dame OL Alex Bars out for season
Notre Dame will be without starting left guard Alex Bars for the rest of the 2015 season.
Head coach Brian Kelly announced Sunday that Bars suffered a fractured left ankle during the Fighting Irish’s 41-31 win over USC on Saturday night. According to ESPN.com, Kelly said Bars’ injury is “very similar” to the ankle injury quarterback Malik Zaire went down with against Virginia in Week 2.
Bars, a redshirt freshman, was filling in for sophomore Quenton Nelson, who sprained his ankle during the Oct. 3 game at Clemson. Nelson came on in relief of Bars after he was injured late in the first half.
Bars is the latest in a growing list of Notre Dame players to suffer season-ending injuries, joining Zaire, running back Tarean Folston (knee), defensive tackle Jarron Jones (knee) tight end Durham Smythe (knee, shoulder) and nickel cornerback Shaun Crawford (knee).
Notre Dame (6-1) jumped to No. 11 in the Associated Press Top 25 after Saturday’s win. The team has a bye this week before resuming play on Halloween against No. 22 Temple (6-0) in Philadelphia.
