Blue Jays stop selling beer cans in upper deck after unruly incident in ALDS
The aftermath of that wild Game 5 of the American League Division Series between the Toronto Blue Jays and Texas Rangers isn’t limited to people tattooing Jose Bautista’s bat flip on their body.
As the American League Championship Series begins its Toronto swing Monday for Game 3, the Blue Jays have made an adjustment to how they sell beer. In the upper deck of the Rogers Centre, the 500 level, fans can no longer buy beer in cans. They’ll have to get their suds in a plastic cup, according to the Associated Press.
after a controversial call that gave the Rangers a one-run lead. The beer-tossing fans delayed the game and one guy was ever arrested when the beer he threw sprayed a baby.
The reason? The unruly incident in that ALDS clincher in which fans began hurling beer cans on to the field[Related: Blue Jays aim to regain their identity at home as ALCS shifts to Toronto]
The Jays agreed to re-examine their security measures with the help of local police and, thus far, this is the biggest change. It does beg the question, though, can’t people in other sections of the park just as easily throw beer cans onto the field?
It’s certainly an understandable move, given the ugly scene from last week, but why not ban beer cans for the entire stadium? Lots of sports and entertainment events already sell beer in plastic cups for this exact reason.
