Alex Rodriguez joins Fox for MLB postseason coverage, promptly breaks TV monitor

Have you had your fill of Alex Rodriguez yet?

As Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and now the producers at Fox Sports might say, it doesn’t matter what you think. The network has already made the decision to bring Rodriguez on board for the remainder of the postseason as a studio analyst.

The announcement was made official during an appearance on Fox NFL Sunday, in which Rodriguez accidentally broke a television monitor on its studio video wall when he overthrew a football pass intended for Jay Glazer.

Oops. Probably not the start Fox was looking for, but at least he apologized.

Now, as for A-Rod’s role as a studio analyst.

And the Internet explodes.

That’s a pretty loaded studio show by the way. But just the thought of A-Rod and Pete Rose sharing studio space and throwing around baseball takes might be too much personality and potential controversy for some people to handle. In fact, several forms of backlash have already started, including some from the baseball media itself.

Oh yeah, and it still has Harold Reynolds handling game coverage.

Well, chances are Fox knew this reaction was coming, and that may have motivated it even further to bring in A-Rod. The lightning rod effect — no pun intended — can drive television ratings, which is exactly what Fox would like for pre and postgame coverage, as well as its sports network Fox Sports 1 coverage, which features its studio crew frequently as well.

No doubt, when A-Rod is on camera and speaking, eyes and ears will be open, and people will be transcribing and analyzing everything that’s said looking for something to latch on to that’s controversial. And wouldn’t it be ironic — and also very refreshing — if that’s not that the case, and Rodriguez is a natural fit for the role, setting up his career beyond baseball.

It’s possible. Not that he needs the money.

It’s also possible he’ll offer next to nothing, but that doesn’t seem too likely. A-Rod, for all his issues, is a smart guy. He knows baseball, obviously, so perhaps our judgment is best reserved until we actually have something to judge.
