Hector Rondon was locked in Busch Stadium bathroom during Game 1
Chicago Cubs closer Hector Rondon earned the save in their Game 2 win against the St. Louis Cardinals.
A little less than 24 hours earlier, he nearly needed to be saved himself after getting locked in a Busch Stadium bathroom.
According to MLB.com’s Carrie Muskat, Rondon was stuck in the bullpen bathroom for several minutes while the game was ongoing. He was literally trapped in what we imagine were pretty small and potentially unpleasant quarters. Apparently there was one potential escape route, but that involved climbing and possibly jumping a long way down. Rondon played it safe, meaning he was forced to wait there until Busch Stadium staff could fix the lock.
Rondon told MLB.com’s Carrie Muskat that he didn’t think he was being pranked. “I closed the door and when I tried to get out, I was stuck. I was there for like five minutes. I was knocking on the door, saying, ‘Hey, I’m locked in.'”
“I started looking which way to get out, and I thought, ‘Oh my God, I might have to jump,'”
Fortunately, Rondon was rescued before he was forced to jump or more drastic measures had to be taken.

And yes, more drastic measure were being prepared.
According to Joe Walsh, St. Louis’ director of stadium operations, city fire department officials were put on standby in case the lock wouldn’t function. They were ready to bust that door down and pull Rondon to safety, which would have turned an already embarrassing situation into something ten times worse.
Also good for Rondon? He wasn’t needed during his fiasco. The Cubs never scored in Game 1, let alone had the lead, so he was never really on call. But could you imagine Joe Maddon calling down for his closer and hearing he was locked in the bathroom?
Actually, we could imagine that. And we can also picture Maddon walking out there himself with a blow torch.
That won’t be necessary in case of a Game 5 at Busch Stadium. According to reports, the Cardinals replaced the lock before Game 2 and there were no reported incidents on Saturday. Of course, that’s also assuming they even dared locking the door again.
