Flyers' Mason benched after crucial turnover
Philadelphia Flyers goalie Steve Mason had some problems on Saturday night. (USATSI)
The Philadelphia Flyers are going to have some issues this season when it comes to preventing goals, mainly because their defense just isn’t that good. Honestly, the only hope they have is for Steve Mason to duplicate his success from the past two seasons and put together another strong performance in net.
On Saturday night in Florida, that was not happening. And when combined with the Flyers’ shaky defensive zone play it resulted in the team giving up four goals on eight shots in the first 6:46 of the first period. Obviously, that’s a bad start.
The fourth goal, scored by Florida’s Jussi Jokinen, came off of this pretty horrific turnover by Mason and was enough to earn him a seat on the bench.
Mason was replaced by backup Michael Neuvirth.
