The Panthers faltered in their game against Iowa’s Hawkeyes in their third game of the season, suffering a 24-27 loss, thanks to a 57-yard field goal by Marshall Koehn. The third quarter of the game would be the only one that Pittsburgh managed to fend off Iowa, claiming 10 points to their opponents’ zero, thanks to some nice play from defensive backs, Ryan Lewis and Pat Amara Jr. While Lewis blocked Dillon Kidd’s punt attempt, Amara pulled the Panthers to an equal 17 score, running back 28 yards. However, in the end, Pittsburgh just missed out on the victory.
This game brought the Panthers their first loss of the season, although for the most part they’ve played a solid game. Nathan Peterman has completed 34 of his 51 passes for 428 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions, while Chad Voytik has managed to complete 16 of his 23 attempts. Qadree Ollison has carried 41 so far this season, gaining 305 yards in the process and two touchdowns, and Chris Blewitt’s kicking game has been on fine point, earning 12 extra points for the team, with three field goals out of five completed.
The Hokies have equalled out their score this season so far, standing at 2-2 after last week’s loss to the East Carolina Pirates. The game finished with a 28-35 score, as Virginia Tech were only able to claim seven points in the final quarter. Quarterback, Brendan Motley ran and threw for a score for Virginia Tech, which gave them an instant 14 point lead, although that lead was torn apart by the Pirates, who equalised by the end of the first quarter and took a further 14 points in the third. This game marked the second season in a row that Virginia Tech have lost to East Carolina.
Motley has completed 55 of his 92 attempted passes this season so far for 770 yards, giving him a 59.8% completion record. He’s also claimed six touchdowns altogether and achieved two interceptions. He’s also played a decent rushing game as well, carrying 45 for 164 yards and three touchdowns. Meanwhile, number 34 running back, Travon McMillian has carried 26 for 209 yards and 63 long. Receptions have been claimed mainly by Isaiah Ford and Cam Phillips, who have taken 22 and 13, respectively. Altogether, the Hokies are currently averaging 14.1 yards per reception.

This just seems like a lot of points to lay after an embarrassing 7-point loss to East Carolina as a 10-point road favorite. The Panthers have an extra week off to game plan after their narrow 27-24 loss at Iowa making the three straight road games less of an issue. Pittsburgh hasn’t faced much this season which may skew the numbers, but they do hold big advantages in two key categories yards per pass differential and yards per rush differential. We’ll look for the visitor to battle this out until the end and may do better than just a point spread cover.
