In this installment of Magic Number Watch, we’ll look at who will be the next club to follow the Dodgers into October.
READY TO CLINCH
Team: Toronto Blue Jays
Magic Number to clinch AL East: 1
Scenario: The Jays are already in the playoffs, but they can clinch the AL East title on Wednesday with a win. After Tuesday’s rainout, Toronto will play two games against Baltimore on Wednesday. The Jays send Marcus Stroman to the hill in Game 1, and R.A. Dickey out there for Game 2.
Team: St. Louis Cardinals
Magic Number to clinch NL Central: 2
Scenario: Following Tuesday’s rainout, the Cardinals will have two chances to clinch the division Wednesday. The Cardinals are already in the playoffs, but they can close out their division by winning one game Wednesday. They’re playing the team chasing them, the Pittsburgh Pirates, so all the Cards need is one win to take another division title.
COMING UP
Team: New York Yankees
Magic Number to clinch playoff berth: 2
Scenario: Despite the loss Tuesday, the Yankees magic number dropped to just two games. New York will take on Boston Tuesday in hopes that they can lower that number even further.
Team: Texas Rangers
Magic Number to clinch AL West: 4
Scenario: The Rangers pulled out a win Tuesday, ending a three game losing streak. A clinch isn’t on the horizon just yet. They need to fend off the Angels (two games back) and the surging Angels (2.5 games back) first.
AL WILD CARD
Teams involved: Los Angeles Angels (83-74), Houston Astros (83-75), Minnesota Twins (81-75), Cleveland Indians (77-78)
Scenario: Still lots to figure out here. The Angels took a half-game lead over the Astros with a win Tuesday. Houston couldn’t defeat the Mariners, and dropped out of the playoffs for now. Minnesota and Cleveland were rained out Tuesday night, and will play a double-header Wednesday.
