Cavs' Shumpert to miss 3 months for wrist injury
INDEPENDENCE, Ohio – Cleveland Cavaliers guard Iman Shumpert will undergo right wrist surgery this week that is expected to sideline him for more than three months, the team announced Tuesday.
Shumpert suffered a ruptured extensor carpi ulnaris sheath “several days” before the start of training camp, which opened Tuesday, according to the team. He received an MRI on Monday after being examined by Dr. Thomas Graham and Dr. Richard Parker at the Cleveland Clinic, confirming the injury.
The Cavs are listing Shumpert’s timetable for recovery at 12 to 14 weeks.
Shumpert, entering his fifth season, re-signed with the Cavaliers on a four-year, $40 million contract in July.
Drafted by the New York Knicks in the first round of the 2011 draft, Shumpert joined the Cavs last year via a midseason trade. In 38 regular-season games with Cleveland, Shumpert averaged 7.2 points and 3.8 rebounds. His productivity jumped in the playoffs, however, with the veteran wing player averaging 9.1 PPG and 4.9 RPG for the Eastern Conference champs.
