Jimmy Rollins channels Madison Bumgarner, recreates staredown with Joe West
If you don’t think ballplayers keep up on the latest happenings around the league, look no further than Jimmy Rollins.
The Dodgers shortstop capitalized on current events, taking an opportunity during Friday’s 7-4 loss in Colorado to recreate the Madison Bumgarner-Joe West staredown with West himself.

For those who missed the original staredown, the Giants ace and Cowboy Joe squared off in an epic staredown stemming from their disagreement over the strike zone. Bumgarner thought West was pinching him, and we know he’s not shy about expressing such things. West, on the other hand, doesn’t like to be called out, but he’ll participate in the showing up someone else if there’s a camera on him.
That led to 17 seconds of this.
Fantastic!
Now, fast forward to Friday. That’s where Rollins and West crossed paths, and right away in the first inning Rollins was able to manufacture his own staredown with West.
Well, we know the triple wasn’t planned, but the staredown had to be, right? Either that or Rollins is just a really quick thinker.
West, to his credit, caught on to Rollins and played along. We think we even saw him crack a smile and perhaps chuckle. We don’t often see light moments from the Cowboy, so that was refreshing.
If you want to read too far into it, you can point out it’s a Dodgers player kind of showing up or mocking a Giants player. It’s true, but this was just a fun moment that successfully removed us from the intensity of September baseball. At least for a moment. On Saturday, things should get a little more serious for the Dodgers as they have a chance to clinch the NL West.
