Cam Newton does a really great thing for a boy battling cancer
A community in North Carolina decided to have early Halloween for a 10-year-old boy battling cancer. Nobody even had to dress up as Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, because Newton himself crashed the party.
Elijah Hughes is battling a rare form of cancer, and according to WCNC-TV, doctors didn’t know if he’d make it to Halloween, his favorite holiday. So on Friday night the people of Concord, N.C. had Halloween in September (h/t to SB Nation). Elijah dressed up as The Joker. And Newton drove the 30 or so miles from Charlotte to Concord to be there.
More than 100 kids came to celebrate Halloween with Elijah, and a bigger attraction for them than Newton himself might have been the ice cream truck Newton brought with.
“As a mom it absolutely melts your heart,” Becky Hughes, Elijah’s mom, told WCNC. “It brings tears to my eyes.”
Newton plays the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. No matter what happens then, he has already won this week.
