This Jonathan Schoop foul ball ruined a perfectly good buffet
some men just want to watch the world burn.” We don’t think Baltimore Orioles second baseman Jonathan Schoop is one of those people, but this foul ball from Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays was particularly devious.
As Michael Caine said in The Dark Knight, “[ On this week’s StewPod: Andrew McCutchen on Pirates’ World Series aspirations.]
In the second inning, Schoop stepped to the plate against Jake Odorizzi. On the second pitch of the at-bat, he fouled off a pitch that was lined down the right field line. The ball traveled just to the right of the foul pole, winding up in the all-you-can-eat section of the ballpark.
While the fans were unharmed, the food wasn’t. Schoop’s foul landed right in one of the buffet tins. Food splattered on the tarp behind the area, and it’s possible some fans were hit with errant shards of onion … or whatever the heck he hit.
Do we think Schoop tried to ruin the fans’ all-you-can-eat experience intentionally? We don’t, though we should note that he’s never done anything like this at home. Makes you think, doesn’t it?

The fans seemed to handle it well, but we’re guessing they were heartbroken. How are you expected to eat a hot dog at a ballgame without raw onions? Let’s just hope they didn’t have to resort to putting ketchup on their dogs. That would make Schoop a true monster.
