Did you miss any of the Week 1 action in the NFL? We’ve got you covered. Here are five plays you shouldn’t miss from Sunday’s games:
Green is gold
The Cincinnati Bengals are 2-0. Their offense is humming. Yes, we know you haven’t bought in yet — fool’s gold, right? OK, fine, then give us this: A.J. Green can ball a little. We good there? Yes, he showed it Sunday against the San Diego Chargers, making the kind of catch that befits a newly minted $60 million receiver. Watch as Andy Dalton rainbows a teardrop and Green hauls it in over his shoulder in the back of the end zone, tapping his toes for a 7-0 Bengals lead.
OBJ is OK
Well, the New York Giants might not be feeling too good, having become the first team in NFL history two blow two straight 10-point fourth-quarter leads in consecutive weeks. But if you’re a silver-lining type of person, the good news is that the Eli Manning-Odell Beckham Jr. connection reignited after a slow Week 1. Watch Manning hit Beckham perfectly on a fade pass on the left sideline for a diving catch despite sticky coverage from Atlanta Falcons cornerback Phillip Adams.
Teddy Tarkenton?
It was a brutal Week 1 for the Minnesota Vikings on both sides of the ball, but it was especially disappointing for their two offensive stalwarts. Teddy Bridgewater looked to build on a strong finish to his rookie year, and Adrian Peterson appeared primed to bust out after almost a whole year off, but both were shackled in their first game. On Sunday, each cut loose against the Detroit Lions, with a great bit of improvisation. Watch Bridgewater’s best Fran Tarkenton impression as he shuttles the ball under pressure to Peterson, who takes the ball a back-breaking 49 yards.
Fisher king
Oh, those wacky Bengals. Watch as offensive coordinator Hue Jackson takes advantage of his athletically gifted rookie, first-round offensive tackle Jake Fisher, and puts him in a pass-catching role. Yes, Fisher — the former college tight end who played for Chip Kelly at Oregon — came in as an eligible receiver on the Bengals’ unbalanced line. He appeared to be blocking on the play but slipped past the first line of defense of the Chargers and caught Dalton’s pass. Nice hands, rook!
Speaking of hands …
The New England Patriots went no huddle and stuck with the no-back spread passing game almost all afternoon against the Buffalo Bills. Tom Brady threw for 466 yards, and 29 of them came on this tremendous throw to and catch by Danny Amendola. Brady floats it over the head of Bills corner Nickell Robey, and Amendola is nearly horizontal to the ground when he catches this pass. How he held onto the ball and didn’t bobble it boggles the mind.
