Michigan State lands Cassius Winston, No. 29 in ESPN 100 – ESPN
Top 30 prospect Cassius Winston announced his commitment to Michigan State on Friday.
Winston, ranked No. 29 in the ESPN 100, chose the Spartans over finalists Pittsburgh and Stanford. He officially visited all three schools, including Michigan State last weekend, and each of the three schools conducted in-home visits with him last week.
Winston is the Spartans’ third ESPN 100 prospect to commit for the 2016 class, joining five-star shooting guard Josh Langford (No. 17) and four-star center Nick Ward (No. 39).
A 6-foot-1 point guard from University of Detroit Jesuit High School (Mich.), Winston was Michigan State’s primary point guard target in the Class of 2016. He plays at different speeds and can really score the ball, while also possessing the ability to create for others. He averaged 19.1 points and 41.8 percent from 3-point range on the Nike EYBL circuit during the spring and summer.
Expect Winston to step in immediately at the point guard spot when he gets on campus next fall. Tom Izzo will turn to former ESPN 100 prospect Lourawls “Tum Tum” Nairn Jr. this season, replacing Travis Trice.
Izzo and his staff will now turn their focus to Miles Bridges, a top-10 prospect who is expected to choose between Michigan State, Kentucky and Indiana on Oct. 3. Bridges, who played with Winston on The Family AAU program, visited East Lansing last weekend and is making a trip to Kentucky this weekend.
