White Sox call on two position players to pitch in blowout loss to A’s
blasted 17-6 by the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday, and another rough outing for Jeff Samardzija meant the White Sox had to turn to their bullpen for a significant amount of mop-up work.
The Chicago White Sox wereSamardzija recorded just nine outs and gave up 10 earned runs. But even with expanded September rosters, Chicago’s pitching staff was already short-handed after Monday night’s series opener with Oakland went 14 innings.
So, since a limited number of relievers were available, that gave us a double-dose of position players pitching.

It was just as glorious as you would imagine.
Second baseman Leury Garcia threw a scoreless eighth inning and even struck out Jason Pridie on a sick two-seamer. Shortstop Alexei Ramirez entered the game in the ninth and also kept the A’s from adding more runs.
It was just the second time in White Sox franchise history that two position players pitched in the same game, and the first time it happened since 1902.
Ramirez in particular had some swag on the mound. Just look at him shake off catcher Geovany Soto!

That was done with the confidence and zeal of a pitching veteran.
The White Sox lost in an embarrassing way Tuesday, but when position players pitch, we all win.
