Mainland field hockey picks up 3-1 win over Millville – NJ.com
Millville faced a typically tough game against Mainland on Wednesday, but the big plays went in favor of the Atlantic County school when it earned a hard-fought 3-1 victory.
“Millville/Mainland games are usually pretty competitive,” Millville coach Claudia McCarthy said. “It just didn’t work out that way in the end.”
Millville was fighting for a tying goal late before Mainland’s Mikayla Carson scored a critical goal with 1:29 to play, assisted by Emma Hoffman.
“Every win’s a big win we think,” said Mainland coach Jill Hatz, whose team rebounded from a 5-0 loss to Ocean City on Tuesday. “It was nice to bounce back from that loss and play hard when we came here. It’s always a tough game on the road no matter.”
The Mustangs took an early lead about four and a half minutes into the first half on a penalty shot goal by Ashley Albright.
Kaylee Harris responded quickly, scoring the Thunderbolts’ only goal less than a minute later, assisted by Natalie Corson.
A goal from Paige Care put Mainland up, 2-1, with 7:31 to go before halftime. Molly Hamilton recorded the assist on the goal, which set up a second half in which neither team could connect until the final minutes.
Millville goaltender Michelle Errickson kept the ‘Bolts close with 13 saves.
“We had trouble getting around her, but we were able to capitalize,” Hatz said.
Millville threatened to tie the game up midway through the second half but a strong Mainland defense and net minder Samantha Morton, who totaled 10 saves, were able to turn away four corner entries.
With the win, Mainland raised its record to 3-1, while Millville is 1-2-1.
