Jordan Spieth jokes he’s happy to get four rounds at the BMW
Jordan Spieth’s travel plans won’t abruptly change this week at the BMW Championship. The third leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs has no cut, so the world No. 2 is guaranteed four rounds at host Conway Farms.
“I’m happy to be checking into my hotel, and when they ask what day I’m checking out, I can say, ‘I’m checking out on Sunday,'” Spieth said Tuesday. “It’s nice.”
Spieth missed his last two cuts to start these playoffs, putting in four sub-standard rounds between The Barclays and the Deutsche Bank Championship. The play has cost him the world No. 1 ranking twice now, as well the top spot in the FedEx Cup, ceded to Barclays winner Jason Day.
However, at second in the points standings, Spieth is guaranteed to finish in the top five in points after this week, meaning that if Spieth wins the Tour Championship in Atlanta next week, he’ll win the FedEx Cup and its $10 million first-place prize.
In one sense, that means Spieth has nothing to play for this week.
“As far as the final tally or the FedExCup, it’s not going to make much of a difference if I win this week or finish 70th because it’ll be re-paired and I’ll be in the top 5, you control your own destiny,” he said.
Spieth is viewing this week, then, as a chance to play aggressively, knowing that style is needed next week at East Lake.
“It makes you feel like you may as well go for broke here and play some shots under pressure that are more dangerous so that you can almost have it ready for next week,” he said.
Add in an $8.25 million purse, too.
“It doesn’t (matter who wins this week), but at the same time it’s not like we’re playing for nothing,” Spieth said. “We still care about money, too. I mean, we like that part of it.”
