End of the Road 2015: Miami Marlins
After Sunday’s loss, the Miami Marlins have been mathematically eliminated from the MLB postseason, meaning that they’ve effectively come to end of the road in their 2015 season. As we’ll do with each eliminated team this season, let’s give them a send-off that[Check out Big League Stew on Tumblr for even more baseball awesomeness.]
We’ll look at the high and lows of their season, what bright spots their future might hold and what questions need answering as they prepare for 2016.
HIGH POINT: Welp, this is awkward. The Marlins actually never led the division at any point in the season. Even if they had, we probably still would have picked Jose Fernandez’s return as the club’s high point. There weren’t a ton of moments when the Marlins received national attention, but everyone takes notice when Fernandez takes the mound. The 23-year-old tossed a quality start his first time out, and proved that he was ready to captivate fans again.
LOW POINT: The fallout after general manager Dan Jennings took over as the club’s manager was pretty strange, even for the Marlins. Shortly after the move was made, a number of players skipped a local charity event. There were some rumors that the club was rebelling against the front office after Mike Redmond was fired. Those were never confirmed, but the timing was awful suspicious.
BEST HIGHLIGHT: You could probably go with Fernandez’s return, but we can’t resist passing up on a Giancarlo Stanton home run. This may not the longest home run Stanton hit this season, but, boy, was it impressive. The opposite field shot was smashed to the upper deck. Normal human players do not display this type of power.
HOPE FOR THE FUTURE: Fernandez is back, and that should make every Marlins’ fan happy. He’ll be a perennial Cy Young contender as long as he can stay on the mound. Stanton should return healthy next season too. That’s good! Christian Yelich and Marcell Ozuna are both young and talented. With the promotion of J.T. Realmuto, most of the team’s immediate talent is already in the majors. Tyler Kolek remains the top prospect, but he’s still a while away from the majors.
QUESTION THAT NEEDS ANSWERING: What the heck is going to happen in the front office? An initial report suggested Jennings might return as the team’s general manager, but a secondary report said the entire front office may change. Jennings is already out as the manager, it appears, so there could be significant changes here. At least they’ll still have the same owner, right? On second thought, yikes!
Footnote: The San Diego Padres, Arizona Diamondbacks and Oakland Athletics are the next teams in line to be eliminated.
