Ravens’ latest last-ditch heave against Denver comes up short
You could forgive Denver fans for being more than a little nervous when Joe Flacco got the ball with less than three minutes left and the Ravens down 19-13 on Sunday. After all, Flacco had a memorable drive against the Broncos in 2013 that resulted in the early exit of Denver from the playoffs (and, eventually, a Ravens Super Bowl victory).
But this time, there were no miracles for Baltimore. Flacco marched Baltimore into position to take multiple shots at the end zone, but threw an end-zone interception to former Raven Darian Stewart. That came just after what should have been a back-breaking touchdown to Steve Smith Sr., who lost track of the pass and saw it bounce off his hands.
It’s only right that this game ended on a defensive stand, since this was an ugly defense-based game. Neither team even took a single snap in the red zone until there were five minutes left in the game. Pick-sixes and field goals from half a field away were the order of the day. The offenses of both Denver and Baltimore are matters of concern, but for the moment, at least, defense is strong and sound.
