While Notre Dame won’t be in much of a celebratory mood after learning that quarterback Malik Zaire will miss the rest of the season with a fractured ankle, things could have been a lot worse on Saturday.
After Zaire left the game in the third quarter, redshirt freshman DeShone Kizer came on in relief.
And it was Kizer who led a drive in the final minutes after Virginia had taken a 27-26 lead, and as Notre Dame was approaching field goal territory late, Kizer happened to look up and see Will Fuller streaking down the sideline.
And then this happened.
The pass wasn’t quite a Hail Mary, but it surely felt like one for Irish fans.
