Oregon certainly propelled themselves into their week one opener against Eastern Washington, claiming a victory of 61-42 against the Eagles. The team’s determination saw them produce 731 yards of total offence in their home state. Sophomore, Royce Freeman claimed 180 rushing yards on 8.6 yards per carry, along with three touchdowns. Adding to such great playing, new starting quarterback, Vernon Adams Jr. debuted in amazing fashion, gathering 350 total yards and two passing touchdowns against his former team. Oregon do have their issues though, which lay in their defence. The 42 points given up by the Ducks in their previous game is the most they’ve allowed at home since 2013.
Thanks to Adams’ brilliant passing game, and receptions from the likes of Dwayne Stanford and Byron Marshall, Oregon completed 19 of the 25 attempted passes, giving them a completion percentage of 76%. Aidan Schneider’s kicking game was on point, attempting and making seven extra points, as well as two extra field goals at 30-39 yards.
The Spartans took on Western Michigan last week, claiming a 37-24 victory. And this came despite the fact that quarterback, Connor Cook wasn’t at his ultimate best, only completing 15 of 31 passes for 256 yards. However, both offensive and defensive tactics were in fine form in general, with the defence line sacking Western Michigan’s quarterback, Zach Terrell seven times over. They also limited the Broncos running game to a mere 18 yards as well, while the offence line showed star quality from players, LJ Scott and Madre London. The two combined for 136 rushing yards on 26 carries.
Average yards per reception for the Spartans stand at 17.1, following their game against the Broncos. DeAnthony Arnett claimed 21 long yards alongside a touchdown, while Michael Geiger grabbed four extra points from the four he attempted and a single further field goal at 20-29 yards. Michigan’s rushing stats show that they claimed 196 yards from 40 total carries and three touchdowns, two of which came from the aforementioned Madre London.

Neither team impressed against weak competition in Week 1 so maybe both clubs were looking ahead to this Week 2 match. That said, we feel that a road trip to in state Western Michigan was a better test than the Ducks FCS opponent Eastern Washington. Oregon easily disposed of Michigan State last season in Eugene, but we think it will be a different story this time around. Spartan Stadium is a tough venue to play in and we’re not sold on the Ducks offense after one game. Lay the points.
