Here are the caps MLB teams will wear to observe the 9/11 anniversary
Major League Baseball has announced its plans to observe the anniversary of 9/11 this season, during a full slate of baseball games being played Friday at ballparks across the country. This isn’t new, as baseball’s intersection with 9/11 goes all the way back to George W. Bush’s famous and victorious first pitch in the 2001 World Series.
Part of MLB’s plans include the American flag caps above that all players and coaches will wear on the field. Here’s a bit more on MLB’s observances and how the sale of the caps will benefit 9/11-specific charities:
On-field personnel, including players, coaches and umpires, will wear caps with a side patch of an American flag during games. All MLB proceeds from sales of these caps will be donated to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, the Pentagon Memorial and the Flight 93 Memorial. Home clubs will mark the date with pre-game ceremonies, including a moment of silence, and the “We Shall Not Forget” MLB silhouetted batter ribbon will be displayed throughout ballparks. Additionally, special lineup cards and base jewels will be used for every game played.
The Toronto Blue Jays will wear customized caps recognizing both the United States and Canada for their game in New York against the Yankees on MLB Network Showcase at 7:00 p.m. ET. MLB Network will also feature coverage of the day’s events across MLB in its studio programming.
The American flag caps are available for every team, so you don’t have to be a Yankees, Mets or Blue Jays fan. See them all over at New Era’s website. There have been on-field 9/11 caps in the past, but there are subtle differences in this version, including the gold outline and the waviness of the flag.
As far as America-themed caps go, these are the best of the bunch that MLB teams wear. The Fourth of July caps and Memorial Day caps are too flamboyant. These are simple, elegant and hit exactly the right note.
