The Fighting Irish opened the NCAAF 2015 season with a stunning 38-3 victory over the Texas Longhorns, playing a stunning game in both offence and defence. Led by junior quarterback Malik Zaire, who claimed a solid 527 yards against the Texas team’s defence, Notre Dame certainly managed to cement themselves an early leading status. However, with star rusher Tarean Folston on the receiving end of a torn MCL during the game, the team’s running game could be in a bit of jeopardy for their match against the Cavaliers.
Zaire completed 19 of the 23 attempted passes for Notre Dame and grabbed three passing touchdowns in the process. A total of 52 carries for 214 yards were gained by the Fighting Irish during their game against the Texas Longhorns, 20 of those claimed by C.J. Prosise. Will Fuller, on the other hand received seven passes out of the total 19, and also took 66 long receptions, as well as two touchdowns.
The Cavaliers suffered an opening week loss to the UCLA Bruins, unable to contain the tactics of players like Josh Rosen and Soso Jamabo, who rushed for 79 yards on nine carries to assist in claiming their 34-16 victory. Despite the loss, Virginia did offer up signs of skill, particularly in the area of offence. Junior quarterback, Matt Johns went 21 of 35 for 238 yards with a touchdown and an interception, showing prowess against the UCLA defence. Last season, the Cavaliers’ offence was middle of the range, although it did fare on a much better level during home games.
As mentioned, Virginia’s passing game was on point in their first week game, thanks to Matt Johns completing 60% of passes, while Taquan Mizzell carried 16 for 45 yards, and Albert Reid 12 for 31 yards. Mizzell also received eight of the total 21 passes completed, claiming a further 100 yards, while 28 long receptions in total were recorded for the Cavaliers.

We were impressed by Notre Dame’s dominance of Texas in Week 1 cruising to a 38-3 win. What’s most impressive is their defense who held the Longhorns to just three points on 163 total yards of offense. Virginia got lit up for 34 points on 503 yards of offense by the Bruins but return home where we should see an improvement on the defense. The Cavs have only five starters returning from last season on defense but this was a sharp unit last season holding the opposition to 21 points or less points in five of their last home games.
