The San Diego Chargers and the Detroit Lions kick off their 2015 NFL football seasons as they face off at Qualcomm Stadium on Sunday.
The San Diego Chargers look to have a strong team this season are hopeful they can make the playoffs this year. The Chargers are led by QB Phillip Rivers who has the quickest release in the game making him tough to sack and defend. The Chargers offense ranked 18th in the NFL in yards and averaged 21.8 points per game crippled by a running attack that averaged 85 yards per game. Branden Oliver appears to be the starter at RB for the Chargers but first round draft pick Melvin Gordon figures to take over and Keenan Allen and Anthony Gates are Rivers top passing targets. Defensively the Chargers were 9th in the NFL in yards allowed and allowed 21.8 points per game. Eric Weddle leads the Chargers defense and he is joined n the secondary by Jason Verrett while Melvin Ingram and Corey Liuget are tough in the front seven. The Chargers look like a better team than they were last season.

The Detroit Lions look to get back to the post-season and once again it may come down to how healthy they are able to stay. The Lions offense was surprisingly ranked just 19th in the NFL in yards and averaged just 20.1 points per game. Matthew Stafford still has a cannon arm and when he is healthy he has been one of the better QB’s. Joique Bell is Detroit’s starter at RB but Ameer Abdullah should push for time. Calvin Johnson is still the Lions best player and one of the best receivers in football and Golden Tate is always a threat as well. Defensively the Lions were the second best team in football in yards allowed and they allowed 17.6 points per game. Haloti Ngata moves into the DL trying to replace the departed Ndamakung Suh while DeAndre levy is one of the top overall tacklers in football and Kyle Van Noy is a sure tackler. The Lions will try to keep the pressure on both sides of the football.
San Diego is 10-1-1 against the spread in their last 12 September games, 2-9 against the spread in their last 11 games, and 0-5 against the spread in their last five home games. Detroit is 4-1 against the spread in their last five week 1 games, 1-5 against the spread in their last six home games, and 0-7 against the spread in their last seven games on grass. Detroit is 1-4 against the spread in their last five games against San Diego.
These teams are the type of teams that when they make mistakes they are usually the kind that cost them the game and with the Chargers being home I give them the edge at a number I think the odds makers just nailed.
