Jordan Spieth misses second cut in a row at the Deutsche Bank
For the first time in Jordan Spieth’s short pro golf career, he has missed consecutive cuts.
Spieth shot his fourth consecutive round over par on Saturday at the Deutsche Bank Championship, turning in 2-over 72 at TPC Boston to miss the cut, just as he did in the first round of the FedEx Cup playoffs last week at The Barclays.
The 22-year-old got off to a bland start after seeing the morning wave torch the Norton, Mass., host course. Spieth made 12 consecutive pars, blowing a number of scoring opportunities that would have gotten him inside the cut line, including a three-putt par on the par-4 fourth after finding the green with his tee shot.
Then the Masters and U.S. Ope winner made a couple of late mistakes which sealed his fate. He was unable to get up-and-down for par on the par-4 13th, missing a 6-footer for par. A hole later, he dropped another shot after missing the green with his approach. This time, he couldn’t sink a 9-foot putt to save par. In frustration, Spieth mockingly took his putter all the way back like a full swing before tapping in the bogey putt.
A bogey-birdie combo on the final two holes wrapped up an academic result.
For those in a rush to put Spieth on Mount Golfmore with the likes of Nicklaus, Hogan and Woods, it might be worth noting that Woods didn’t miss back to back cuts on the PGA Tour until this season, straddling his missed cut to end the 2013-14 season at the PGA Championship with a missed cut to start this season at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.
There’s a silver lining for Spieth, in the form of a technicality. After a week off, the FedEx Cup playoffs resume with the BMW Championship just outside of Chicago and conclude with the Tour Championship in Atlanta. Given his current No. 2 position in the standings, Spieth is a lock to play in both, which have no cut — going down as cuts made under PGA Tour rules. So, no matter how this PGA Tour postseason ends for Spieth, he’ll close it with consecutive cuts made.
