Delaware Valley field hockey picks up first win – MyCentralJersey.com
The East Brunswick and Delaware Valley High School field hockey teams each stepped onto the field on Saturday ready for redemption after starting the season 0-1 on Friday.
It was Delaware Valley that ultimately came out victorious at home in a 4-0 shutout, evening its record at 1-1.
After a long back and forth battle, junior Riley Ferrar scored on an assist by senior Kerrianne Blankinship to put the Terriers up 1-0 with 2:25 left in the first half. Ferrar scored twice with the second goal coming unassisted to raise the lead to 3-0.
Senior Ann Bill scored the second goal of the game on an assist by Jeanne Harabedian at 27:34 in the second half. Freshman Trinity Perini squeaked in one more at 5:28, assisted by Blankinship.
Delaware Valley head coach Stephanie Cirino was proud of her team and felt that they played smart.
“Our strengths were our touches inside the circle,” Cirino said. “We were able to find the back of the net today which was really, really good. It was nice to see some different people scoring and we worked the ball around really well so we put together a good team win.”
Ferrar added to her coach’s sentiments.
“I think we worked really well together,” she said. “Our transitions were really nice, we had good touches and we were getting strong first touches and I think we were communicating really well.”
Cirino said that the only area she saw that could use some improvement was footwork.
“We need to work on getting the ball away from our feet,” she said.
The loss gave the Bears an 0-2 record to start the season. Head coach Cindi Todoroff believes that the problem is due to her team’s inexperience.
“We are definitely a work in progress,” she said. “I only have three returning starters from last year so this is a young, growing team. That’s where we are right now, we’re learning by fire.”
The Bears felt the loss of senior goalie Brandi Coyle, who separated her shoulder in a scrimmage a few days prior to the game. Todoroff is unsure when she will be able to return. Sophomore Kayla Silva took Coyle’s place.
Delaware Valley’s win came after an 8-0 blow-out to Hackettstown, while East Brunswick fell 2-0 to Piscataway on Friday.
