Baylor scores 8 TDs to cruise past SMU
Baylor had a bit of a scare early Friday night against SMU, but the Bears held the Mustangs scoreless over the second half and pulled away for a 56-21 victory.
SMU hung with Baylor for most of the first half. SMU answered Baylor’s first two touchdowns with touchdowns of its own, including a score on its first offensive play from scrimmage. The two first quarter touchdowns also meant that the Mustangs had more points in the first eight minutes of the 2015 season opener than they did through the first four games of the 2014 season. Yes, things may be a bit different in Dallas this year.

The game could have been tied at halftime too. Trailing 28-21, SMU was driving for a tying touchdown before the break. However, quarterback Matt Davis was sacked while expired in the second quarter as SMU didn’t have any timeouts left. The bright side of the messup? It gave the Twittersphere a ton of jokes about these SMU fans incredulous at what they had just seen.
The second half was all Baylor, however, It took nine minutes for the Bears to score the first points of the third quarter, but once they did, SMU was hapless to stop the Baylor offense. The Bears put up 28 points in an 11-minute span to put the game away and nearly cover the massive 36-point spread.
How good did things go for Baylor in the second half? Well, the final touchdown of the game was from freshman quarterback Jarrett Stidham, who had just come into the game for Seth Russell. And it was on the first pass of his career too. Stidham, a native of Stephenville, Texas, was the No. 6 dual-threat quarterback in the class of 2015.
Russell, making his first start after succeeding Bryce Petty, threw for 376 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. He even had a long touchdown run (just before Stidham’s touchdown pass that actually counted) that was brought back because of a holding penalty. Baylor wide receivers Corey Coleman and KD Cannon, the only pair of returning receivers on the same team who both topped 1,000 yards in 2014 each had more than 100 yards.
