Betting Odds
Point Spread: Tar Heels +3/Gamecocks -3
Total Line: 64
South Carolina has confidence in its two running backs, Brandon Wilds and David Williams, so there’s a chance that the Gamecocks will lean on the run game with a first time starter at quarterback, Connor Mitch. However, head coach Steve Spurrier tends to offer up a very balanced offensive in general, and will not rely entirely on the run game. Instead, it’s most likely that South Carolina will spend plenty of time throwing the ball.
The Gamecocks’ 2014 season saw them finish in a tied fourth place in the Eastern Division. Total completed passes equalled 277, with 270 of these done by starting quarterback, Dylan Thompson. South Carolina had both decent offence and defence statistics, finishing the 2014 season having claimed 2093 rushing yards and 3661 receiving yards, with 23 and 28 touchdowns completed, respectively.
North Carolina, on the other hand, had quite a disastrous season last year in terms of offence. The Tar Heel front five didn’t manage to successfully pass protect many balls and a very limited amount of run offence was conducted. The team is returning four of five starters on the offensive line, so it’s expected that 2015 will be much improved in terms of their offensive strategy. Quarterback Marquise Williams needs to be given time to throw and create holes and a push for the running backs.
Stats from the 2014 season for North Carolina saw them finish 6-7, 4-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference to end the year in a tie for third place. Of the 509 attempted passes last season, only 315 were completed, with the aforementioned Williams carrying 193 for 788 rushing yards. 1973 rushing yards and 3614 receiving yards made up the statistics for the Tar Heels, with 26 rushing and 29 receiving touchdowns completed.

This is a tough game to call with both teams having multiple new parts on the defensive side of the ball, but we feel that the offensive of the Tar Heels on paper is vastly superior to that of the Gamecocks. You may find some 3’s still out there and if not, we believe that it is worth the price to buy up to a 3 with a minimum of 50% of your bet.
