Miami RB Gus Edwards out for season
Gus Edwards, one of Miami’s top running backs, will miss the entire 2015 season.
The program announced the news Sunday night, saying Edwards suffered a left foot injury during preseason camp.
Edwards, a 6-foot-2, 241-pound junior, was expected to be a major contributor for the Hurricanes on offense in 2015 in the effort to succeed Duke Johnson.
Head coach Al Golden said Edwards was injured during an Aug. 22 scrimmage. It was originally ruled a day-to-day injury, but further medical examining revealed that it would keep Edwards out for the season.
“Gus worked extremely hard for the last nine months to prepare for this moment, ” Golden said in a statement, per CaneSport.com. “He set a high standard and did a great job leading and being unselfish. We are tremendously disappointed for him, but we will be there with him on the road to recovery and anxiously await his return.”
Edwards was third on the Hurricanes in rushing in 2014 with 349 yards and six touchdowns. He also rushed for 338 yards and five touchdowns as a freshman in 2013.
Edwards “is likely to have surgery” on the foot “soon,” according to the Palm Beach Post.
With Edwards out, sophomores Joe Yearby and true freshman Mark Walton will likely receive the bulk of the carries with sophomore Trayone Gray also in the mix. Yearby had 509 yards on 5.9 yards per carry in 2014 while Gray had 24 yards on six carries.
Walton, a Miami native, was a four-star recruit in the 2015 class. Rivals.com rated him as the 69th-best prospect in the country.
The Hurricanes open up at home against Bethune-Cookman on Saturday.
