Arizona LB Cody Ippolito tears ACL, out for 2015
Arizona linebacker Cody Ippolito is out for the season after tearing his ACL.
A redshirt junior in 2014, Ippolito played in all 14 of Arizona’s games with six starts. He was sixth on the team with 52 tackles.
“What’s a shame is Cody was having a really good camp,” Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez said via the Arizona Daily Star. “He’s a tough, hard-nosed football player that comes and loves to compete and practice. … He’ll rehab like crazy and hopefully we’ll get him back for another year or two playing at a high level.
Ippolito was slated to see significant time at strongside linebacker for the Wildcats this season as well as be the primary backup for Scooby Wright at middle linebacker.
The reason Rodriguez says “year or two” is because this will be the second time that Ippolito has missed a season because of an injury. He missed the 2013 season because of an ACL injury as well and redshirted that year. Since he’s scheduled to be a redshirt senior in 2016, he could apply for a sixth year of eligibility from the NCAA to play in 2017 if he wanted.
Rodriguez also said that two receivers, Trey Griffey and Tyrell Johnson, would miss “a couple of weeks” with foot injuries. Griffey is the son of former baseball great Ken Griffey Jr.
