Madre London atop Michigan State’s depth chart at running back
Has Michigan State found its starting running back? Madre London, a redshirt freshman, is now at the top of the Spartans’ depth chart.
London has been competing with sophomore Gerald Holmes freshman Larry Scott and junior Delton Williams. While being the starting running back may seem trivial in the modern football world where running backs share carries, Michigan State has had a running back run for over 1,000 yards in four of the last five seasons. Edwin Baker ran for over 1,000 in 2010, Le’Veon Bell did in 2012 and Jeremy Langford did in 2013 and 2014.
Coach Mark Dantonio made the move after Saturday’s scrimmage. The school didn’t release statistics from the scrimmage, but London said he broke two big gains and had over 100 yards rushing.
“I broke a 70-yard run and 40-yard run,” London said via SpartanMag.com. “The 40 was for a touchdown … I am not sure how many I had, but I know it was in the 100s.”
But while London was pushed to the top of the chart, Dantonio wasn’t ready to say he had substantially eclipsed the other three running backs.
“They’re all sort of grouped in there,” Dantonio said. “London had a great scrimmage. Gerald is probably ahead of [Scott] in terms of knowing what to do, but [Scott] makes plays and looks very, very good out there. Delton Williams is just getting back into the flow of it.”
Dantonio also said he was leaning towards not redshirting Scott. Williams recently returned from a team suspension. He pled guilty to a weapons charge after being involved in a traffic incident where he allegedly waived a gun at another motorist.
