Jose Reyes isn’t exactly enjoying his time with the Rockies
Even someone with a heart two sizes too small has to feel for Jose Reyes.
Since he was traded from the Toronto Blue Jays to the Colorado Rockies for Troy Tulowitzki on July 27, the Blue Jays have gone on an absolute tear. Toronto has won 19 out 24 games to take over first place in the AL East.

As he’s watched his former team thrive, we can’t say Reyes has found quite the same level of success in Colorado. The 32-year-old shortstop has a lowly .684 OPS with the Rockies as they’ve gone 6-18 since his debut and sit at the bottom of the NL West.
All that losing is clearly weighing on him a little.
“You come from a ballclub that was competing for a spot in the playoffs. And you come to a club in last place. You think about that,” Reyes said of the trade that ripped him out of Toronto.
“I’m at the point in my career that I want to win,” Reyes said. “I say it over and over. I want to win. I don’t want to spend the rest of my career on a last-place team. That’s not the kind of player I feel like I am.”
“We’ll see what happens here,” he said. “But in the next couple years, I don’t want to waste my time like that.”
With the Rockies appearing nowhere near ready to contend in the short-term, Reyes is in tough. A trade before the Aug. 31 waiver deadline remains a possibility – Reyes cleared waivers and is eligible to be traded to any team – though at this point seems unlikely.

An offseason move makes more sense. Reyes is owed $22 million in each of the next two seasons and has a $4 million buyout for 2018. Those are pretty expensive terms for a shortstop in decline, but odds are there’s a team out there willing to take a chance that Reyes can be the dynamic offensive contributor he was earlier in his career.
