Ball boy makes outstanding diving stop to protect A’s bullpen
After a relatively slow start to the season, we’ve recently seen a resurgence from ball boys and ball girls around Major League Baseball.
It all started two weeks ago in San Diego when a Padres ball girl made one of the finest defensive plays we’ve seen all season, leaping in the air to pull down a rocket line drive. It continued last weekend in Los Angeles, where a Dodgers ball boy tumbled head over heels into the stands attempting to make a grab.
Now, thanks to the ball boy down the left field line in Oakland, we have a trifecta of notable highlights.

During Saturday’s Rays-A’s game at O.Co Coliseum, Oakland’s Marcus Semein smoked a foul ball toward the A’s bullpen that was coming to eat. At least from the perspective of Oakland’s relievers, we’re sure the baseball looked like it had teeth, and they were pretty much helpless as the baseball neared.
That’s where our ball boy comes in. In heroic fashion, he soars into the picture. Then, with a full extension dive, he flags the ball down to keep the A’s safe.
Seriously, that’s an incredible effort. And he didn’t mind dirtying the uniform at all.
That is serious commitment to the job. And to make things better, his first instinct when popping to his feet was to run right over and hand the ball to a young fan.
You’re alright in Josh Reddick’s book, Oakland ball boy. And you’re alright in ours too. Keep doing your thing.
