‘Straight Outta Compton’ makes a big blunder with Eazy-E’s White Sox cap
N.W.A. biopic “Straight Outta Compton” seems to be a winner by most accounts — at the box office, with moviegoers and with hip-hop heads. There’s just one problem. And to some sports-minded folks, it’s a big one.

Eazy-E is shown wearing a Chicago White Sox cap entirely from the wrong era. The film shows Eazy rocking this Sox cap in 1986. While he did wear that cap — quite famously, in fact — it sure wasn’t happening in 1986. The White Sox didn’t introduce that logo and that cap until 1991.
Since that’s a pretty famous cap, many people noticed the gaffe during the film’s strong opening weekend and were upset by it. Heck, I asked one of my hip-hop aficionado friends what he thought of the movie overall and the first thing out of his mouth was the hat error. Some other folks had this to say:
Now, Eazy is closely associated with that particular cap, so it’s easy to see how this could happen. But part of making a good biopic is not messing those things up. Many people also connect Eazy to that cap because of Dr. Dre’s 1993 diss track “Dre Day,” in which Dre says of Eazy, “I got my chrome to the side of his White Sox hat.”
