Madison Bumgarner, Zack Greinke help teams win on the mound, at the plate
Take a look around the league with Big League Stew’s daily wrap up. We’ll hit on all of the biggest moments from the day that you may have missed, while providing highlights, photos and interesting stats.
No player did more to help his team win Sunday than San Francisco Giants ace Madison Bumgarner. But Zack Greinke of the Los Angeles Dodgers did come close.
Bumgarner and Greinke, already regarded as two of the best pitchers in the National League, showed that they’re mighty dangerous at the plate too. Each starting pitcher homered to lead their teams to victory Sunday. Have we mentioned we love pitcher dingers? Because we totally love pitcher dingers.

We’ll start with Bumgarner, whose contributions at the plate didn’t begin and end with the homer. He actually had an RBI double in the fifth inning before homering in the seventh. It was Bumgarner’s fourth homer of the season, the most among MLB pitchers.
The Giants won 5-0 and Bumgarner was immaculate on the mound too. He threw a three-hit shutout, striking out 14 Washington Nationals hitters. Hello, postseason form. The Nats, meanwhile, are a mess and moving further away from the postseason by the day. It was their sixth straight loss, moving the once-World Series favorites a game under .500. Ouch. Need more pitcher dingers, obviously — among other things.
Meanwhile, down in L.A., the Dodgers edged the Cincinnati Reds by the score of 2-1. The difference? A solo homer by Greinke that came as the second of back-to-backs with Joc Pederson in the fifth inning. Point to Greinke for impeccable timing.

On the mound, Greinke pitched seven innings, allowing six hits and one run. He struck out eight and lowered his MLB-best ERA to 1.58. His homer was his second of the season, which puts him second behind Bumgarner for the most in baseball by a pitcher.
At the very least, someone in baseball needs to set up a 1-on-1 home run derby between these two the next time the Dodgers and Giants play.
ROYALS GET OFF WALK-OFF WIN OVER ANGELS
The Kansas City Royals pulled off an extra-innings, come-from-behind, walk-off win in the Sunday night game against the Los Angeles Angels. Like Bumgarner, K.C. was pulling off its best October tricks too.

The Royals were down 3-2 in the ninth, but tied up the game on an Alex Rios sac fly that sent this one to extra innings. With Kauffman Stadium rocking for the national TV audience, K.C. then pounced in the tenth. Ben Zobrist singled, advanced to second when Eric Hosmer walked and darted around to score when Kendrys Morales singled. It was a 4-3 win for the Royals, who have won three straight and now own a 12-game lead in the AL Central.
MILLER FLIRTS WITH NO-NO, GETS NO DECISION INSTEAD
Shelby Miller took a no-hitter into the eighth for the Atlanta Braves, losing it when Nick Ahmed of the Arizona Diamondbacks singled to lead off the inning. That’s when Miller’s ongoing tough luck continued to show itself. Ahmed would come around to score on a fielder’s choice later in the inning, tying the game and turning Miller’s near no-no into a no decision.
The Braves won 2-1 in 10 innings on a Cameron Maybin walk-off homer. That might be enough on the surface to mask that Miller pitched well again and didn’t get a win, even though the 24-year-old struck out 10 batters and allowed two hits in seven innings.
This was the 16th straight start in which Miller hasn’t earned a W. What’s odd about that is he has a 2.43 ERA, which is fifth best in the National League, so he’s obviously been pitching really well. At least the Braves won Sunday. Before that, they’d lost 10 straight games Miller started, including five of them where he gave up two runs or fewer.
