Rory McIlroy makes early run with monster 63-foot eagle putt
SHEBOYGAN, Wis. — Rory McIlroy is making a run in Saturday’s third round of the PGA Champioship.
McIlroy played four-under over the first five holes at Whistling Straits. McIlory birdied the second and fourth before making some major waves with a 63-foot eagle putt on No. 5. That moved the defending PGA Championship winner to -6 for the tournament, five shots behind leader Matt Jones, who will tee off later in the day.
If McIlroy’s left ankle is still bothering him, he’s certainly not letting on. He scored a one-under 71 in both of his first two rounds while playing with Jordan Spieth. This is his first tournament since injuring his ankle playing soccer in early July.
No. 5 has been a fun hole for McIlroy this week. He made every highlight reel for his Thursday adventure on the par 5, rolling up his pants leg for an up-and-down par save from the water.
