One of the Anaheim Ducks‘ biggest moves this offseason was their draft-day trade that brought them restricted free agent Carl Hagelin from the New York Rangers in exchange for Emerson Etem and some draft picks.
On Friday, they were finally able to come to terms on a new deal with Hagelin, signing him to a four-year contract extension through the end of the 2018-19 season. The team did not release financial terms of the deal, but Eric Stephens of the Orange County Register reports the deal is worth a total of $16 million which comes out to an annual salary cap hit of $4 million per season.
The speedy Hagelin is a strong two-way player that should be a nice addition to an already talented and deep Ducks lineup. In 82 games with the Rangers in 2014-15 he scored 17 goals to go with 18 assists.
He is also the latest player that the Ducks have managed to lock up to a long-term contract extension this summer. Along with Hagelin, the team has also signed Ryan Kesler and Jakob Silfverberg to new deals and now has 10 players signed for at least the next three years.
The $4 million per year price tag for Hagelin is probably a little high for a guy that projects best as a third-liner, but cap space isn’t a problem for the Ducks at the moment. With 24 players now under contract for this season, the Ducks are still $8 million below the league’s salary cap and will be putting one of the best teams in the league on the ice.
